What is Bowen's Disease?
Bowen's disease is a very early form of skin cancer that is easily treatable. The main sign of Bowen's disease is a red, scaly patch on the skin that may be itchy or burning.
What causes Bowen's Disease?
Bowen's disease is caused by the growth of cancer cells in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). These cancer cells stay within the epidermis and do not spread to other parts of the body.
Who is at risk for Bowen's Disease?
Bowen's disease is most common in people who are over 60 years old and have fair skin. People who have a lot of sun exposure are also at an increased risk for Bowen's disease.
How is Bowen's Disease treated?
Bowen's disease is easily treated with topical medications, cryotherapy, or surgery. The type of treatment that is recommended will depend on the size and location of the lesion.
What is the prognosis for Bowen's Disease?
The prognosis for Bowen's disease is excellent. If it is treated early, it is usually curable.
